Hollywood Celebrities Are Crazy for Microneedling: Here's Why

If there’s one thing that’s true about a lot of celebrities, it’s that they’re almost always on board to try new cosmetic procedures designed to help battle the signs of aging. And when it comes to microneedling, a lot of celebrities have become longtime devotees. A-list celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian are just a few of the Hollywood denizens who’ve turned to microneedling to banish fine lines and wrinkles, reduce or eliminate scarring, and even improve the way their skin looks and feels. At NeoSculpt Laser Vein & Cosmetic Surgery Center, you can get the star treatment too, with custom microneedling treatments using the most advanced technology aimed at delivery optimal results.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that works by promoting natural healing processes deep inside your skin, including the production of collagen and elastin, two of the building blocks of healthy skin. The microneedling device contains a series of extremely thin, sterile needles designed to create very tiny punctures into the upper layers of your skin. These punctures cause what’s known as “controlled injury” to your skin. It’s this controlled inujury that signals your body to begin a healing process in the treatment area. Dr. Patel uses a microneedling device called the CosmoPen, a state-of-the-art instrument that features 12 needles or pins and adjustable depth and speed functions so your treatment can be tailored for your specific needs, skin type and treatment goals.

As your body starts to heal, cellular turnover speeds up so damaged cells are replaced by healthy, undamaged cells. Production of collagen and elastin ramps up as well, filling in wrinkles and scars and creating a resilient network for your skin while helping it look and feel firmer and more youthful. While our skin produces collagen and elastin on its own, as we get older production slows down dramatically, which means our skin doesn’t “bounce back” as it once did, leaving us prone to wrinkles and lines. By promoting collagen and elastin formation, microneedling helps “undo” some of the age-related damage in our skin while also helping skin look more refreshed and rejuvenated overall.

In addition to diminishing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and scars, microneedling can be very effective in treating enlarged pores and uneven texture and skin tone. The increased levels of collagen and elastin can also improve the tonicity of lax skin that’s lost some of its natural elasticity.

What to expect during your treatment session

First of all, despite its scary-sounding name, microneedling is not nearly as uncomfortable as you might expect it to be. Before your treatment begins, your skin will be numbed with a topical anesthetic to keep you relaxed and comfortable throughout the session, and afterward, a gentle balm helps with healing and recovery. The length of your treatment session depends on the area that’s being treated, but most appointments are less than 20 minutes.

After your microneedling session, you may have some mild redness, tingling or sensitivity in the area as it begins to heal, and it’s very important to protect your skin from sun exposure during these early stages of healing. There’s no downtime after the treatment, so you can go back to your regular routines. You’ll begin to see the results of your treatment within a couple of weeks as healing processes kick in and healthy skin is revealed.

Depending on the results you’re looking for, Dr. Patel can incorporate platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) into your session to enhance healing responses and new tissue generation. Both PRP and PRF are derived from your own blood, and by applying the products topically during your treatment, the tiny punctures enable growth factors and other healing elements to penetrate more deeply so they’re more effective.
